Do you feel like hiding out when January comes, the holidays are over, and the weather starts to get cold? Really cold. Perfect. That’s when the St. Lawrence River freezes over at Hideout on Howe, and the winter fun begins.

If you’ve only ever skated indoors on artificial ice, you’re in for a treat. Each year, we create a natural outdoor rink right here on the river. Whether you’re new to skating, love figure skating or enjoy a fast-paced game of hockey, there’s nothing like skating in the fresh, cold winter air and sunshine. When you’re ready for a break, your cottage is just steps away from the rink. Our rink also features lights and a nearby firepit, so the skating doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.

Follow these tips to get the most out of your outdoor skating experience.

  • Wear layers. You’ll be cold when you start skating but will warm up quickly.
  • Get your skates sharpened. Natural ice can be harder than the ice at your local indoor rink. Sharp blades are easier to skate on.
  • If you’re new to skating, wear a helmet!

Contact us to find out when our rink will be open this year – we’d love to give you and your family this quintessential Canadian experience.
