What a beautiful spot to wake up to on the (un)official start of summer. Wandering through the forest with trickling brooks & small streams, blossoming trees and plants, sunlight streaming in through the canopy of trees…this is life. Found my morning coffee spot!

High water in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River this year is a flashback to 2017…but with the strategies we’d put in place, this spring will only require a bit of landscaping. We’ve got tractors & loaders on-site because today we’re raising the height of our break-wall.
We’re moving at full speed to ensure your stay at Hideout will be a memorable one.

Family fishing days in Ontario are times when you can do so without a license! Bring your spouse & kids out for a few days of fun on the river. From the boat or a dock, we’ve got you covered.
The fish will be jumping, calling out to you, all summer. Family fishing days this year are May 11-12, June 15-16 & June 20-July 7.

Do you feel like hiding out when January comes, the holidays are over, and the weather starts to get cold? Really cold. Perfect. That’s when the St. Lawrence River freezes over at Hideout on Howe, and the winter fun begins.
If you’ve only ever skated indoors on artificial ice, you’re in for a treat. Each year, we create a natural outdoor rink right here on the river. Whether you’re new to skating, love figure skating or enjoy a fast-paced game of hockey, there’s nothing like skating in the fresh, cold winter air and sunshine. When you’re ready for a break, your cottage is just steps away from the rink. Our rink also features lights and a nearby firepit, so the skating doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.
Follow these tips to get the most out of your outdoor skating experience.
- Wear layers. You’ll be cold when you start skating but will warm up quickly.
- Get your skates sharpened. Natural ice can be harder than the ice at your local indoor rink. Sharp blades are easier to skate on.
- If you’re new to skating, wear a helmet!
Contact us to find out when our rink will be open this year – we’d love to give you and your family this quintessential Canadian experience.

They say that time goes by as quickly as you travel. Since that tends to be very fast these days, our family slowed things down a bit while enjoying our time at Hideout on Howe, our favourite cottage rental in the Thousand Islands.
We spent a few hours exploring nearby Kingston by bicycle, and it was the perfect leisurely way to see the city’s picturesque waterfront. We started right downtown, on the bike path near Confederation Park, and rode through parks and past century-old buildings and historic monuments, pausing once in a while to read the plaques or simply take in the stunning views of Lake Ontario.
Biking will definitely be a priority for us from now on. It’s a great way to truly get to know a new place. Next on our list while we’re here: the peaceful country roads on Howe Island and the quaint St. Lawrence waterfront of Gananoque.
